Report CCCC
Development XI v Whitehaven: Sunday 29th August 2010: at
Whitehaven CC:
Cumberland
CCC fielded a young team to play against a Whitehaven Select
Team at The Playground, Whitehaven. The game was a testimonial
to aid the dependants of the people killed during the shootings
in
West Cumbria
this year. A minutes silence was held to remember the people who
had sadly passed away.
On a sunny afternoon
Cumberland
won the toss and elected to bat. Following the early dismissal
of Kendal's Jack White, Ryan Carruthers (Cockermouth CC) and
Greg Platten (Barrow CC) formed a century partnership until
first Greg and then Ryan retired with 50 both to their names.
Jake Daniel (15 years old) of Workington CC carried on the good
work with a mature 51 Not Out (hardly looking in trouble
throughout his innings) with additional contributions from Alex
Atkinson (Netherfield CC) 21, and Chris Hodgson of Cockermouth
CC a quick 11. A final total of 201 being a decent score on a
very good Whitehaven CC wicket. Best for Whitehaven were Neil
Killeen Durham CCC with 0 for 23 from 8 overs, Steven Chambers
of Cockermouth 1 for 23, Steven Holliday
of Whitehaven CC 2 for 38, Whitehaven Professional Ryan
Butterworth 1 for 29 and Seascales Steve Brown with 1 for 35.
Whitehaven Select started slowly against some fine new ball
bowling from 16 year old Jack Cumberbatch of Lindal CC and
Andrew Ireland (15 years old). The introduction of off spinner
Hodgson accounted for the wicket of Chambers who chipped a ball
straight to mid-wicket where Platten secured a fine catch. This
brought M. Allen another Durham CCC representative to the
wicket, where both he and Holliday then built the innings until
both needed to retire on 50. Other scorers for Whitehaven were
Butterworth 23, George McCaffrey (another Durham CCC
representative) and David Watson 36. The innings came to an
exciting climax with 10 needed from the last over, bowled by Ben
Barrow of Netherfield CC bowling his only over of the innings
due to Jack White suffering a leg injury. The first ball was
duly dispatched for a fine six over backward square leg leaving
four to win. The next ball was then sent soaring towards the
boundary and seemed as though it was going for six, the ball
then dropped and fell into the grateful hands of Chris Hodgson
who caught the ball comfortably. The tail enders then came and
swung the bat unfortunately missing the ball to finish with
Barrow taking four wickets in four balls and
Cumberland
winning the game by 3 runs.
The game was played in true sporting spirit with cricket the
winner with some money raised for a very deserved cause. The
game was well umpired by Messrs Robin Blair, Brian Nixon and
Albert D'Leny and Ms Mary Smith. Thanks go to Whitehaven CC for
preparing a wonderful tea and a superb wicket. 12 year old Josh
Brabbins was 12th man for the Cumberland Team and hopefully Josh
has learnt something from watching some excellent cricket.
